However, cats have natural instincts to climb, scratch, and hunt. To keep an indoor cat happy and healthy, you must enrich their environment. Here is how to create a stimulating indoor home.
1. Provide Vertical Space
Cats feel safe and confident when they can view their territory from above. Invest in tall, sturdy cat trees with scratching pillars, wall-mounted shelves, and window perches. This is especially important for active breeds like Bengals and Siamese, who love to climb.
2. Scratching Outlets
Scratching is a natural behavior used to stretch muscles and mark territory. Provide both vertical scratching posts and horizontal cardboard scratchers. Place them near areas your cat likes to sleep or play.
3. Mental Enrichment and Toys
Indoor cats can become bored, leading to weight gain and behavioral issues. Use puzzle feeders that force them to work for their food. Schedule daily play sessions with feather wands, laser pointers, or toys to simulate hunting. Cat exercise wheels are also excellent for energetic breeds.
4. Secure Catios
A "catio" (cat patio) is a secure, enclosed outdoor structure connected to a window or door. It allows your cat to enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and bird watching safely, without the risks of roaming free.
