History & Origin

The Siamese cat is an ancient breed, described in the "Tamra Maew" (Cat Book Poems) from Siam, dating back to the 14th century. They were kept by royal families and temple priests, valued as guardians and symbols of luck. In the late 19th century, they were introduced to Great Britain and the United States, quickly becoming a sensation. Over the decades, breeders developed two distinct types: the Traditional Siamese (Applehead), which has a rounder head and sturdier body, and the Modern Siamese (Show type), which features an extremely sleek, tubular body, a wedge-shaped head, and large, low-set ears. Both types retain the classic pointed coloration and vocal nature.

Personality & Behavior

Siamese cats are outgoing, intelligent, and highly vocal. They are the extroverts of the cat world, constantly seeking attention and interaction. They communicate in a distinctive, loud voice (often compared to a baby's cry) and will carry on conversations with their owners. Siamese form strong, loyal bonds with a single person or family and can be quite demanding of attention. They are active and playful, enjoying games of fetch, learning tricks, and climbing to high viewpoints. They do not like being left alone and can become lonely or stressed without companionship.

Physical Appearance

The Modern Siamese has a long, slender, and tubular body with fine bones and long, thin legs. The head is a sharp, wedge-shaped triangle with large, pointed ears that follow the lines of the wedge. Their eyes are almond-shaped, tilted, and must be a deep, striking blue. The coat is very short, fine, and close-lying, with no undercoat, emphasizing their sleek musculature. The tail is long and thin, tapering to a fine point. The Traditional Siamese has a rounder head and sturdier body but shares the same sleek coat and blue eyes.

Colors and Patterns: Siamese are pointed cats with a light-colored body and darker points on the ears, face, paws, and tail. The four classic point colors are Seal Point (dark brown points on a fawn body), Blue Point (slate grey points on a bluish-white body), Chocolate Point (milk chocolate points on an ivory body), and Lilac Point (frosty pinkish-grey points on a white body). Other variations like Red, Cream, Tabby (lynx), and Tortie points are also recognized in some associations.

Size & Maturation

Siamese are medium-sized, lightweight cats. Adult males typically weigh between 3.5 kg and 4.5 kg, while females weigh between 2.5 kg and 3.5 kg. Their long, slender legs and bodies give them an elegant, graceful appearance.

Health & Genetic Conditions

Siamese are generally healthy, but their genetic heritage makes them prone to certain conditions. These include Amyloidosis, a protein buildup in organs like the liver; Asthma and bronchial diseases; congenital heart defects; and dental problems. Strabismus (crossed eyes) and kinked tails, once common, have been bred out by reputable breeders but can still occur. Regular veterinary care, dental cleaning, and a good diet are important. A healthy Siamese can live 12 to 20 years.

Exercise & Play Requirements

Siamese are highly active and require plenty of exercise and play. They need vertical space to climb and jump; cat trees and climbing shelves are highly recommended. Interactive toys, feather wands, and puzzle feeders keep their minds active. Because they are highly intelligent, they can easily learn tricks and enjoy walking on a harness. They should be kept indoors to protect them from diseases and accidents.

Household & Family Suitability

Siamese are suitable for active households, families, and owners who want a highly interactive, chatty companion. They are not recommended for people who want a quiet cat or those who work long hours away from home, as they can become depressed or destructive. They do well with children and other social pets.
