The Ragdoll breed was created in California in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker. She bred a free-roaming white long-haired cat named Josephine, who had a remarkably docile and placid temperament, with birman-type and burmese-type cats. The offspring exhibited the unique characteristics of going limp when held and having a sweet, gentle personality. Baker trademarked the breed and established a registry (IRCA). Later breeders, notably Denny and Laura Dayton, broke away to establish the breed in mainstream feline associations, ensuring its global recognition.

Personality & Behavior

Ragdolls are sweet, calm, and highly affectionate. They crave human attention and are happiest when snuggly next to their owners. They are not active jumpers, preferring to stay on the floor or furniture level. They are very quiet and have a soft, sweet voice. Ragdolls are highly cooperative and gentle, making them excellent companions for children who handle them carefully. They form close bonds with their families and are highly social, welcoming visitors and getting along well with other pets.

Physical Appearance

The Ragdoll is a large, sturdy cat with a long, muscular body and broad chest. Their head is a broad wedge with rounded contours and a slightly curved profile. Their eyes are large, oval, and must be a vivid blue color. Their ears are medium-sized, set wide apart, and tilted forward. The coat is semi-long, plush, and silky, with a soft texture that resists matting, and a fluffy ruff around the neck. They have a long, bushy tail.

Colors and Patterns: Ragdolls are pointed cats with three main patterns: Colorpoint (solid points with no white), Mitted (white paws on the front and white boots on the back, with a white chin and belly), and Bicolor (a white inverted V on the face, white legs, chest, and belly). The point colors include Seal, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Red, and Cream, which can also exhibit tortoiseshell or tabby (lynx) variations. Their bodies are light-colored, creating a beautiful contrast.

Size & Maturation

Ragdolls are large felines. Adult males can weigh between 6.5 kg and 9.5 kg, while females are smaller, weighing between 4.5 kg and 6.5 kg. Like Maine Coons, they grow slowly, taking 3 to 4 years to reach their full size and coat development.

Health & Genetic Conditions

Ragdolls are generally healthy, but they are genetically susceptible to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). DNA screening is available and used by responsible breeders to eliminate these conditions from their bloodlines. Ragdolls can also be prone to bladder stones and obesity if their diet is not monitored. A healthy Ragdoll can live 12 to 17 years.

Exercise & Play Requirements

Ragdolls have low to moderate energy levels. They do not require vigorous exercise and prefer gentle play. Interactive toys, feather wands, and soft balls are ideal. Because they are trusting and lack strong outdoor survival instincts, they must be kept as indoor-only cats for their own safety.

Household & Family Suitability

Ragdolls are exceptionally well-suited for families with children, single owners, and seniors. Their calm and patient temperament makes them tolerant of children.
